Create a Dashboard

The Dashboard in Superset is a powerful tool that allows you to create custom layouts and visualizations by combining multiple charts, filters, and other components on a single canvas. It provides a comprehensive view of your data, enabling you to gain insights and make data-driven decisions.

Layout Structure

Let's get started by understanding the Dashboard layout.

The Dashboard layout consists of the following two main panels:

  1. Top Panel:
    • Header: The header section displays the dashboard title and provides option to mark the dashboard as your favorite.
    • Learn more: Click here to open our help center.
    • Buttons: Edit, save, or discard changes.
    • More Actions: Access additional options such as edit properties, download, share settings, etc., through a button with three dots.
  2. Central Panel: Includes the canvas on the left and 'Charts & Layout Elements' on the right.
    1. Canvas: The canvas, located on the central left side, allows you to arrange and resize your charts, filters, and other components. It provides a flexible grid system for positioning and resizing elements.
    2. Charts & Layout Elements: This panel on the right contains two tabs:
      1. Charts: The Charts tab contains a list of all charts to which you have access (i.e., charts you have created or those shared by a team member).
      2. Layout Elements: Customize and design your dashboard with elements such as tabs, rows, columns, headers, text, and dividers.

Create a Dashboard

Creating a new dashboard is a straightforward process designed to facilitate your data visualization needs.

  1. Add New Dashboard: Click the "+ Dashboard" button at the top right on the dashboard page.
  2. Name your dashboard: Enter a name for your dashboard in the field at the top left. The default name is 'Untitled Dashboard'. Choose a name that clearly describes the purpose of the dashboard for easy identification.
  3. Add Charts to Your Dashboard: Once your dashboard is created, the next step is to populate it with charts. There are two ways to do that:
    • Select existing charts:  You can easily drag and drop the charts from the Charts tab to the canvas area.
    • Create a new chart: Click the "+ Create New Chart" button on the Charts tab, and proceed with the process of creating a new chart.
  4. Customize the Layout:
    • Position and Resize Charts: You can resize charts by dragging the edges or corners to fit them as desired on the layout. To change chart display name, simply click on its name and type the new name.
    • Add Layout Components: You can add various types of visualization components to the canvas. These components can be resized , moved and customized according to your requirements.
    • Change Color Scheme: You can change the color scheme of the dashboard by selecting the color palette icon in the Dashboard Properties setting.
  5. Set Refresh Rate (optional): If real-time data is crucial, set up a refresh rate to ensure the data on your dashboard is regularly updated.
  6. Save: Click on "Save" to save your dashboard and exit edit mode. This sets the dashboard status to 'draft', making it invisible in the listings.
  7. Publish Dashboard: Ready to share your work? Just click the status pill next to the chart name to publish your dashboard.
