Use Chart Builder

Chart Builder makes it simple to create custom charts tailored to your data. In this guide, we'll explore the key features of the interface and and show you how to create a chart.

Getting Started

First, let's familiarize ourselves with the main areas of the interface:

Top Panel:

The Top Panel provide you quick access to essential functionalities:

  • Name: Your chart's name
  • Save Button
  • More Actions Button: the "three dot icon" opens a dropdown menu offering advanced options for chart handling.

Chart Source Panel

The Chart Source Panel allows you to select and manage your data sources, ensuring you have the right dataset loaded for creating your visualizations.

  • Ingestion Source: This shows where your data is coming from. Switching datasets will not affect your current configurations.
  • Metrics and Columns: Here, you can view and select the data metrics and dimensions available for your chart. Each data type includes a small icon that conveys its type:
    • ƒ: Function used for metrics
    • Clock: The datasource's time column (used below)
    • ABC: Text data
    • #: Numeric value data

Metrics and Columns can be dragged & dropped into the Chart Configuration panel to configure your visualization

Chart Configuration Panel

This panel is your toolset for crafting precise and visually appealing data charts. It is organized into several sections, each tailored to refine your chart’s presentation to meet specific analytical requirements and aesthetic choices.

  • Chart Type: Here, you can see the currently selected chart type and explore other available options. Choose the format that best suits your data visualization needs.
  • Query: Customize your data query based on the type of chart you are creating. This section adapts to your selected chart type, offering relevant configuration options to optimize data representation.

Result Panel

This panel provides a real-time glimpse of how your data transforms into insightful visuals.

  • Preview Area: This shows a preview of your chart.
  • Results & Samples Tabs:
    • Results: This tab displays the outcomes of your data query in a clear, table format. It's perfect for reviewing detailed results and verifying data accuracy.
    • Samples: Dive into this tab to explore samples from your dataset. It's a great way to quickly understand the nature of your data and check for consistency or anomalies.

Step-by-Step Chart Creation

 

  1. Select Your Data
    1. Choose a Data Source: Make sure your data source is correctly selected in the Chart Source Panel.
    2. Select Metrics and Dimensions: Decide on the metrics for analysis and dimensions for breaking down the data.
  2. Set Up Your Chart
    1. Select a Chart Type: Choose the appropriate chart type that best represents your data.
    2. Define the Axis and Metrics: Drag and drop the necessary fields into the Axis and Metrics areas respectively.
    3. Add Filters: If you need to focus on specific subsets of data, use the filters.
    4. Customize Dimensions and Sorting: Organize how your data should be segmented and in what order it should appear.
  3. Preview the chart: click the "Create Chart" button to create and see the chart on the Result panel.
  4. Save the Chart: Once satisfied with the setup and preview, click the "Save" button to save the chart.
